A mural is a painting on a wall.
This mural is about the history of Lake City.
Today’s Words
color
Meaning: Color is a type of light.
There are many different colors from dark to light. For example, red, blue, and
yellow are colors.
EXAMPLE: The boy’s favorite color is
green. He has 3 shirts and one hat with the color green.
art / art object
Meaning: Art is an object that we enjoy
looking at. It can honor a person or an idea, or tell a story. Examples of art
are photographs, monuments, murals, paintings, and more.
EXAMPLE: The student is taking art
classes in college. She is learning to paint. She is painting a picture of the
trees and water.
photograph
Meaning: (noun) A photograph is a
picture made using a camera. A photograph can be black and white or color.
EXAMPLE: When her family went to China
for a vacation, she took a lot of photographs. China is a beautiful country.
The photographs help her remember the beautiful vacation.
monument
Meaning: (noun) A building
or a statue made to honor someone.
EXAMPLE: The Washington Monument is a building
in Washington, D.C. It honors George Washington, the first president of the
United States, also the father of our country.
mural
Meaning: (noun) A mural is a work of
art usually painted on a wall, street or ceiling.
EXAMPLE: In Seattle, there is a mural
in a park in the Lake City neighborhood. The mural is about the history of Lake
City.
public art
Meaning: Public art is works of art made
for all people to visit and enjoy. It is in public
places such as libraries and buses, or outdoors in parks. It can be monuments, murals, sculpture and
other types of art. It is the opposite of private art which in people’s homes.
EXAMPLE: The City of Seattle has 400
works of public art around the city for people to visit and enjoy. The mural in
Lake City is one example of Seattle’s public art.
museum
Meaning: A place that has art objects
for people to see and study.
EXAMPLE: The Seattle Art Museum has art
objects from many countries and cultures. People can visit the museum and see
art from Africa, China, Korea, Europe and South America.
EXAMPLE: The student is taking art classes in college. She is painting a picture of the trees and water.
