11/10/2022 – Topic: Art in Our Home – part 2




















Today’s Words

 

CRAFT

Meaning: A skill in doing something or making something with your hands and tools; also, art. Examples of crafts are jewelry, pottery, clothes, knitting.

EXAMPLE: John is taking a class in arts and crafts. He is learning how to make furniture such as chairs and tables.

 



These are crafts made by our teacher, Haley. They are jewelry pins of different dogs. People wear the pins on their clothes.











 

ARTIST / CRAFTSMAN

Meaning: A person who makes art or crafts.

EXAMPLE: Our teacher, Haley, is a craftsman. He makes jewelry of animals (dogs and cats) with clay and paint. People wear the jewelry on their clothes.



SCULPTURE

Meaning: (noun) A three-dimensional work of art. Examples of sculpture are statues of people, monuments, totem poles, and more.

EXAMPLE: The Burke Museum in Seattle has sculptures made by native Americans such as totem poles, drums and rattles.

 

TATTOO

Meaning: A mark or drawing on the skin.

EXAMPLE: The man has a tattoo on his arm of a large bird – the American bald eagle.

 

GRAFFITI

Meaning: Drawings or words made on a wall or other surface; similar to murals. Graffiti is made with paint and is made to be seen by the public.

EXAMPLE: It is illegal to paint graffiti on private property in Seattle. Even if it is beautiful or tells an important story, the graffiti will be removed.

 

IDIOM: “Get something down to an art”

Meaning: To do something well or efficiently because you have experience.

EXAMPLE: Carol is a working mom with three children. She makes lunch for her children to take to school everyday. She got lunch-making down to an art. She can make 3 sandwiches in 3 minutes!

 

Small Group Questions

 

1.     What is your favorite type of art? Photographs, murals, crafts? Do you have this type of art in your home?

2.    Show us an example of art that you like. Describe it. Who is the artist?

3.    Do you know someone who is an artist? What type of art do they make? Do you make art?

4.    Where did you learn about art? In school, at home? What did you learn?

5.    Did you take an art class? What did you learn?

6.    What type of art is popular in your home country? Name a famous museum or monument in your country?

7.    All countries and cultures have art. Let’s look at examples of art from countries around the world. What do you see? Guess the country it is from.

8.  Some types of art tell a story. For example, there is a famous painting of George Washington and the American Revolutionary War. Look at the painting. What is the story?

9.    Do you think that art is important to society? Why?

10. Have you heard the phrase “get something down to an art”? What does it mean?
