11/1/2022 – Topic: Fire Safety in the Home – part 3



The smoke alarm chirps. 


It’s time to replace the battery.



Fire Safety Words

[We learned these words last week. Please review them for Tuesday’s class.]

 

SMOKE / BREATHE SMOKE

Meaning: Smoke is the gas from a fire.

EXAMPLE: Wildfires in Washington State make smoke. The smoke is not healthy to breathe.

 

FIRE HAZARD

EXAMPLE: A hazard is something that is dangerous. Cooking on a stove is a fire hazard if someone is not careful. Putting a heater next to curtains and furniture is a fire hazard.

 

PREVENT A FIRE

Meaning: Prevent a fire is to stop a fire from happening by practicing safety.

EXAMPLE: We can prevent fires at home by being careful when we cook food on the stove.

EXAMPLE: A smoke alarm makes a loud noise when there is smoke in the house. “Beep, beep, beep!” A smoke alarm makes the home safe from a dangerous fire.

 

ESCAPE / ESCAPE PLAN

Meaning: Escape means to get away from something, usually something dangerous. An escape plan is a set of actions to get away from something dangerous.

EXAMPLE: An escape plan for fire will help you and your family get out of the house quickly.

b.    Heaters need space from curtains and furniture. How many inches of space is safe for a baseboard heater? A portable space heater?

Fire Safety Words

[We studied these words last week and on Tuesday. Please review them for Thursday’s class.]

 

FIRE

Meaning: Fire happens when something is burning. Fire is light and hot. It can be dangerous.

EXAMPLE: A candle makes fire for light. The gas stove makes fire to cook food.

 

FLAME

Meaning: Flame is the yellow and orange gas from a fire. Flame is hot. It burns the things it touches.

EXAMPLE: The flames from the wildfire spread (moved) very fast and burned many trees in the forest.

EXAMPLE: The fire on the cookstove damaged the pots and pans. It damaged the kitchen walls.

10/25/2022 – Topic: Problems and Solutions in the House – part 1



PROBLEM: There is a fire in the pot on the stove.

What can you do to stop the fire?







SOLUTION: Wear a hot pad mitten to protect your hand. Cover the pot with a lid.



Today’s Words

 

PROBLEM

Meaning: A difficult or hard situation. There are many types of problems – house, health, crime, homelessness and more.

EXAMPLE: An example of a problem in the house is a clogged drain. An example of a health problem is high blood pressure.

 

 

SOLUTION

Meaning: A solution is an answer to a problem. It is a way to fix the problem.

EXAMPLE: A solution for a clogged drain is to clean out the drain pipe. A solution for high blood pressure is to exercise every day and eat less salt.

1.     Who is your oldest family member? How old are they? 

2.    Sometimes we have a problem in our house or apartment. For example, a window is broken or the smoke detector goes off. What do you do when the smoke detector goes off?


3.    Let’s look at pictures of problems in the house (below). Tell us what you see. What is the problem? Did this happen in your house? What do you do? 

          A. The window glass is broken.

A.   The window is wet (foggy).

B.    There is black mildew on the tile in the bathroom.

C.    You see a mouse in the house.

D.   You see a water stain on the ceiling.

 

4.    There are small problems that can happen outside of the house. For example, you order a drink at the coffee shop. It’s not the one you ordered. Did this happen to you? What do you say?

5.    You are at the grocery store. The cashier tells you how much to pay. You left your wallet at home – no money, no credit cards. Did this happen to you? What did you do? 

6. You took the bus to school or work. You left something on the bus – your jacket, a purse or a school book. Did this happen to you? What did you do? 

7. You rode your bicycle to school. You parked your bicycle and locked it outside. Someone took (stole) your bicycle. Did this happen to you? What did you do? 

8. You are going to an appointment in a new place. You get lost. You need to ask someone for directions. What do you say?

 

9.    On Thursday, our topic for conversation class is Fire Safety in the Home. We will talk about fire hazards in the house. For example, lighting candles in the house is a fire hazard. Name another example of a fire hazard.

 

10. We will learn about ways to make our homes safe from fire. Have you had a fire in your home? What did you do?

Today’s Words

 

HOUSEWORK / HOUSE CHORES / HOUSEKEEPING

Meaning: Housework is tasks such as cleaning and cooking. Housework is the same as house chores and housekeeping.

EXAMPLE: The children help their parents with housework. The boy sweeps the kitchen floor and takes out the garbage. The girl washes the dishes.

 

HOUSE PROBLEMS

EXAMPLE: Two common problems in the house are clogged drains and leaky faucets.

 

DRAIN / CLOGGED

Meaning: A drain is a pipe in the kitchen sink or bathroom sink. Water goes down the drain. A clogged drain is a problem when the water will not go down. It sits in the sink. The sink fills with dirty water.


EXAMPLE: The drain in the kitchen sink is clogged. 

When the drain is clogged, the sink fills up with water. Water doesn’t go down the drain. 








EXAMPLE: This is a leaky faucet. 
The water does not stop running.







Small Group Questions

1.     What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

 

2.    What day of the week do you do grocery shopping? Does someone in your family help you? Who? How do they help?

 

3.    All families share housework (house chores). Name 2 chores you share with others. Do you do the chores daily, weekly or monthly?

 

4.    What is your favorite house chore? Your least favorite?

8.    Today, we talked about small problems in the house. Next week, we will talk about a big problem – fire hazards in the home.

 

Our topic is Fire Safety in the Home. We will have a guest speaker from the Seattle Fire Department. We will learn how to make our houses safe from fire.
