11/1/2022 – Topic: Fire Safety in the Home – part 3



The smoke alarm chirps. 


It’s time to replace the battery.



Fire Safety Words

[We learned these words last week. Please review them for Tuesday’s class.]

 

SMOKE / BREATHE SMOKE

Meaning: Smoke is the gas from a fire.

EXAMPLE: Wildfires in Washington State make smoke. The smoke is not healthy to breathe.

 

FIRE HAZARD

EXAMPLE: A hazard is something that is dangerous. Cooking on a stove is a fire hazard if someone is not careful. Putting a heater next to curtains and furniture is a fire hazard.

 

PREVENT A FIRE

Meaning: Prevent a fire is to stop a fire from happening by practicing safety.

EXAMPLE: We can prevent fires at home by being careful when we cook food on the stove. 

 

SMOKE ALARM

EXAMPLE: A smoke alarm makes a loud noise when there is smoke in the house. “Beep, beep, beep!” A smoke alarm makes the home safe from a dangerous fire.

 

ESCAPE / ESCAPE PLAN

Meaning: Escape means to get away from something, usually something dangerous. An escape plan is a set of actions to get away from something dangerous.

EXAMPLE: An escape plan for fire will help you and your family get out of the house quickly.

1.             Did you have a fire in your home? Where did it start - in the kitchen? In the bedroom? What did you do?

2.            Last week, we learned about fire safety. Name 2 things you learned.

3.            What things cause fires in the home? For example, cooking? Heaters? Cigarettes? Candles?

4.            What are the 2 biggest causes of fires in the home?

a.    Smoke alarms keep us safe. What rooms in the home should have a smoke alarm? What rooms should not have a smoke alarm?

b.    Smoke alarms have batteries. When should you replace the batteries? Every month? Every year? Never?

b.    Heaters need space from curtains and furniture. How many inches of space is safe for a baseboard heater? A portable space heater?

7.            A fire escape plan tells you how to get out of the house. Do you have a fire escape plan for your home?
