10/27/2022 – Topic: Fire Safety at Home

























Fire Safety Words

[We studied these words last week and on Tuesday. Please review them for Thursday’s class.]

 

FIRE

Meaning: Fire happens when something is burning. Fire is light and hot. It can be dangerous.

EXAMPLE: A candle makes fire for light. The gas stove makes fire to cook food.

 

FLAME

Meaning: Flame is the yellow and orange gas from a fire. Flame is hot. It burns the things it touches.

EXAMPLE: The flames from the wildfire spread (moved) very fast and burned many trees in the forest.

 

SMOKE / BREATHE SMOKE

Meaning: Smoke is the gas from a fire.

EXAMPLE: Wildfires in Washington State make smoke. The smoke is not healthy to breathe.

 

FIRE HAZARD

EXAMPLE: A hazard is something that is dangerous. Cooking on a stove is a fire hazard if someone is not careful. Lighting candles in the house is a fire hazard.

 

PREVENT / PREVENT FIRE

Meaning: Prevent is to stop thing from happening.

EXAMPLE: We can prevent fires at home by being careful when we cook food on the stove. 

 

DAMAGE

Meaning: (noun) Damage is loss or harm to a person or property. (verb) To damage is to hurt or injure something or someone.

EXAMPLE: The fire on the cookstove damaged the pots and pans. It damaged the kitchen walls.

 

SMOKE ALARM

EXAMPLE: A smoke alarm makes a loud noise when there is smoke in the house. “Beep, beep, beep!” A smoke alarm makes the home safe from a dangerous fire.

 

ESCAPE / ESCAPE PLAN

Meaning: Escape means to get away from something, usually something dangerous. An escape plan is a set of actions to get away from something dangerous.

EXAMPLE: An escape plan for fire will help you and your family get out of the house quickly.

·         Common fire hazards in the home

1.             We are learning about fire safety in the home. What information is new for you? What is not new?

2.            A smoke alarm keeps us safe. What rooms in the home should have smoke alarms?

3.            Is it okay to cover a smoke alarm? Paint it?

4.            Smoke alarms get old and may not work. When should we replace them?

5.            If you hear the smoke alarm – “beep, beep, beep!” What do you do?

6.            There are 2 common causes of house fires. What are they?

7.            A fire escape plan tells you how to get out of the house. Do you have a fire escape plan for your home?

8.            There is a fire in your house. You cannot escape (get out of the house). What do you do?
