Crime Prevention Words

[We learned these words on Tuesday. Please review them again for Thursday’s class.]

 

CRIME

Meaning: Something that is against the law

Example: He robbed a bank. That is a serious crime.

 

THEFT

Meaning: When someone takes what is not theirs.

Example: Someone took my car! It is car theft. I told the police.

 

 

SAFETY

Meaning: Being free from danger.

Example: My child’s safety is very important.

 

ASSAULT

Meaning: When someone hurts another person.

Example: The man assaulted the bus driver. He punched his face, and broke his nose.

 

BELONGINGS

Meaning: Things that are yours. For example, your phone, your wallet, and your jacket.

Example: They took all of my belongings from my backpack.

 

GRABS YOUR BAG

Meaning: Someone takes your purse, shopping bag or backpack. It is theft.

Example: The girl grabbed my bag when I was sitting on the bus. I told the police.

 

EXPERIENCE A CRIME

Meaning: To have a crime happen to you.

Example: I experienced a crime in the Fred Meyer store. Someone took my purse.

 

REPORT A CRIME

Meaning: To tell a police officer about a crime you saw or experienced.

Example: I saw a car theft in my neighborhood. I called 911 and reported it to the police.

 

Small Group Questions

 

Our guest speakers are Sarah Lawson and Katelyn Yep. We will learn about:

·         Calling 911

 

1.             We are learning about crime prevention. What information is new for you? What is not new?

2.            Car theft is a common crime. Can you name another example of a common crime?

3.            What makes you feel safe? Unsafe?

4.            What do you do to be safe from crime?

5.            Let’s look at pictures about crime prevention. Is it safe or unsafe? Why?

6.            Calling 911 can help when you have an emergency. Have you called 911 for an emergency in your home? What happened?

7.            When is it a good idea to call 911? For example, if you need help from the police, can you call 911?

8.            If you need a nurse, can you call 911?

11.  You are walking down the street; someone sees you and starts yelling at you. They push you and walk away. What is your first step?

Today’s Words

THANKSGIVING

Meaning: Two words: Giving + Thanks. A holiday for giving thanks.

Example: Our family with celebrate Thanksgiving with a lot of good food. 


CELEBRATE

Meaning: To do something special on a holiday or other happy occasion. 

Example: Seattle celebrates The 4th of July with fireworks.

HARVEST

Meaning: The food a farmer grows and gathers. 

Example: There will be a big harvest of rice this year.


TRADITIONAL / TRADITIONAL FOOD

Meaning: Something that a group always does. 

Example: My family always has turkey on Thanksgiving. It is a traditional Thanksgiving food.

 

AMERICAN INDIANS / NATIVE AMERICANS

Meaning: The first group of people to live in America.

Example: The American Indians came to America in 10,500 B.C. They were farmers and hunters.

 

PILGRIMS

Meaning: The Pilgrims were the second group of people to live in America.

Example: The Pilgrims came to America in 1600. The traded (did business) with the American Indians.

 

Traditional Thanksgiving Day food:

turkey

gravy

yam/sweet potato

mashed potatoes

cranberries

pumpkin pie

1.             What do you know about the Thanksgiving Day holiday? Name one thing.

2.            What do you want to know about the Thanksgiving holiday?

3.            Does your family celebrate Thanksgiving?

4.            How do you celebrate it? For example, at home? With your family?

5.            What is the traditional Thanksgiving Day food? Name 2 examples.

6.            Have you eaten this food? What do you like? Dislike?

7.            Thanksgiving is a day when people give thanks. For example, to give thanks for health, family, or peace. Name 2 things you give thanks for.

8.            Is there a holiday in your home country about giving thanks? How do people celebrate it? What food is made?

9.            Thanksgiving is a federal holiday. Schools, banks, and government offices are closed. What else is closed? What is open?

10.         The first Thanksgiving Day holiday was in 1621 in the state of Massachusetts. American Indians and English immigrants (Pilgrims) celebrated the holiday together. What did they celebrate?

History of Thanksgiving Day in America

 

·         Year 10,500 BC – The first people come to America. They are called American Indians. They live in large villages. They are farmers and hunters.

·         Year 1600 – The second people come to America. They are called Pilgrims. They come from Europe, Africa and Asia. They trade with the first Americans.

·         1621 - American Indians and Pilgrims celebrate the first Thanksgiving in Massachusetts.

·         1863 - President Abraham Lincoln makes Thanksgiving Day a national holiday.

Today’s Words

 

DREAM JOB

Meaning: The perfect job for you.

EXAMPLE: I love being a doctor; it is my dream job.

 

 

SALARY / WAGE

Meaning: The money a worker gets for doing their job.

EXAMPLE: He earns a weekly wage/salary of $500.

 

WORKER BENEFITS

Meaning: Things a worker gets from their employer that are not money. 

EXAMPLE: I have good benefits with my new job: health insurance, childcare, and a retirement fund!

 

Idiom: MOONLIGHT

Meaning: (verb) To moonlight is to work more than one job.

EXAMPLE: I work full time at QFC, but I’m moonlighting at McDonalds.

 

Small Group Questions

 

1.     What is your dream job? Why is it your dream?

2.    What are the job duties? What skills do you need? Do you know someone with your dream job?

3.    Name 2 qualities of a great boss. Do you know someone who is a great boss?

4.    Most employers in the U.S. pay workers a salary and benefits. What is the difference?

5.    Vacation time is one example of a worker benefit. Name 2 other examples.

6.    Family leave is a benefit. A worker can take time off work for a new baby in the family. Did you take time off work for a new baby? For a family member who was sick?

7. A volunteer works for free. Name 2 examples of volunteer jobs.

8. Do you know someone who volunteers? Why do they volunteer? Where can you find volunteer jobs?

9. Have you heard the term “moonlight”? A person moonlights when they work two jobs. Do you know someone who moonlights? What are their jobs?

10. Which is more important? To like your job or to make a lot of money?

She is wearing a uniform for her job. What are the clothes?


Today’s Words

 

JOB

Meaning: (noun) Work. Can be paid or unpaid (volunteer).

EXAMPLES:

She is a police officer. The job is difficult but the salary (wage) is very good.

Her brother is a father. His job is to care of his two young children. It is a difficult job and it is unpaid (no money).

 

WORKER / EMPLOYEE

Meaning: (noun) a person who has a job, usually paid by someone such as an employer. Also, employee.

EXAMPLE: Amazon and Microsoft are large companies in Seattle. They hire and employ thousands of workers.

 

JOB DUTY / JOB DUTIES

Meaning: (noun) a task that the worker does on the job; for example, cleaning, cooking, and driving are job tasks.

EXAMPLE: Samson is a bus driver. His job duties are to follow a route and pick up people and drop them off. Another duty is to obey traffic laws.

 

JOB SKILL

Meaning: A skill is something that you can do; an ability you have. For example, reading and writing English is a skill you need for a job.

EXAMPLE: Samson is a bus driver. His job skills are a driver license, good vision (sight), and the ability to lift 50 pounds.

 

JOB APPLICATION / JOB INTERVIEW

Meaning: A job application is a form that the employer gives you to fill out for the job; also, a form to apply for a job. A job application asks for information about work experience and education.

EXAMPLE: Susan filled out the job application for a teaching job. The employer liked her application so much that she got a job interview.

 

RETIRED PERSON / RETIREE

Meaning: A person who had a job in the past, and has stopped working the job and earning a salary. A retiree may work as a volunteer.

EXAMPLE: Cynthia is a retiree. She stopped working at her job in 2018, and now she volunteers for Literacy Source.

 

DRESS CODE / UNIFORM

Meaning: A dress code is the rules for clothes and shoes a worker wears on the job. For example, a bus driver wears a uniform. A cook wears an apron. A cashier wears a name tag.

EXAMPLE: Jin’s new job does not have a dress code. He can wear what he likes to work – but not pajamas!

 

Small Group Questions

 

1.     What was your first job? Describe the duties. For example, washing, cleaning, and cooking.

2.    Let’s talk about common jobs. Look at the pictures of workers. Name the worker’s job. Describe the duties.

3.    Let’s talk about our jobs. Your teacher will start by telling you about their job.

4.    Please ask your teacher a question about their job. Example: How did you find your job? What do you like about it? What job skills do you need?

5.    Tell us about your job. Do you have a job now? In the past? What is/was it?

6.    How did you find your job? For example, did a friend tell you?

7.    Did you fill out a job application? Did you have a job interview?

8.    In the U.S., a full-time job is 35-40 hours per week. Is your job full-time or part-time? What days and times do you work?

9.    What do you like about your job? What is difficult?
