THANKSGIVING

Meaning: Two words: Giving + Thanks. A holiday for giving thanks.

Example: Our family with celebrate Thanksgiving with a lot of good food. 


CELEBRATE

Meaning: To do something special on a holiday or other happy occasion. 

Example: Seattle celebrates The 4th of July with fireworks.

HARVEST

Meaning: The food a farmer grows and gathers. 

Example: There will be a big harvest of rice this year.


TRADITIONAL / TRADITIONAL FOOD

Meaning: Something that a group always does. 

Example: My family always has turkey on Thanksgiving. It is a traditional Thanksgiving food.

 

AMERICAN INDIANS / NATIVE AMERICANS

Meaning: The first group of people to live in America.

Example: The American Indians came to America in 10,500 B.C. They were farmers and hunters.

 

PILGRIMS

Meaning: The Pilgrims were the second group of people to live in America.

Example: The Pilgrims came to America in 1600. The traded (did business) with the American Indians.

 

Traditional Thanksgiving Day food:

turkey

gravy

yam/sweet potato

mashed potatoes

cranberries

pumpkin pie

History of Thanksgiving Day in America

 

·         Year 10,500 BC – The first people come to America. They are called American Indians. They live in large villages. They are farmers and hunters.

·         Year 1600 – The second people come to America. They are called Pilgrims. They come from Europe, Africa and Asia. They trade with the first Americans.

·         1621 - American Indians and Pilgrims celebrate the first Thanksgiving in Massachusetts.

·         1863 - President Abraham Lincoln makes Thanksgiving Day a national holiday.
