In Washington State, we will have a General Election on November 8, 2022.  Who can vote in the election? Where do people go to vote?

GOVERNMENT

Meaning: The people that lead a country, state or city.

EXAMPLE: In the U.S., the government leaders are the president, Congress and Federal judges.

 

VOTE / VOTE FOR A GOVERNMENT LEADER

Meaning: (verb) To vote means to choose someone or something.

EXAMPLE: In the General Election on November 8, we will vote for a U.S. senator.

 

ELECT / ELECT A GOVERNMENT LEADER

Meaning: (verb) To elect is to choose someone for a government office.

EXAMPLE: In the General Election, the citizens of Washington State will elect a U.S. senator.

ELECTION / GENERAL ELECTION

Meaning: (noun) An election is an event (date and time) where we choose someone for a government office.

EXAMPLE: The General Election in the U.S. is held every year on the first Tuesday in November.

IDIOM: “Vote with your feet”

Meaning: (verb) To show that you do not like (dislike) a place, event, or situation.

EXAMPLE: If the war doesn’t end, thousands of people will vote with their feet by leaving the country to find a better life.

8.      What are some ways citizens in our state can tell a senator about their concerns? For example, write a letter or email?

9.      Which is more important – what a senator says (their words), or what they do (their actions)?

10.    Have you heard the phrase “vote with your feet”? What does it mean? Have you ever voted with your feet?
