  • Putting out the garbage.








Today’s Words

 

HOUSEWORK / HOUSE CHORES / HOUSEKEEPING

Meaning: Housework is tasks such as cleaning and cooking. Housework is the same as house chores and housekeeping.

EXAMPLE: The children help their parents with housework. The boy sweeps the kitchen floor and takes out the garbage. The girl washes the dishes.

 

HOUSE PROBLEMS

EXAMPLE: Two common problems in the house are clogged drains and leaky faucets.

 

DRAIN / CLOGGED

Meaning: A drain is a pipe in the kitchen sink or bathroom sink. Water goes down the drain. A clogged drain is a problem when the water will not go down. It sits in the sink. The sink fills with dirty water.


EXAMPLE: The drain in the kitchen sink is clogged. 

When the drain is clogged, the sink fills up with water. Water doesn’t go down the drain. 








EXAMPLE: This is a leaky faucet. 
The water does not stop running.







Small Group Questions

1.     What is your favorite day of the week? Why?

 

2.    What day of the week do you do grocery shopping? Does someone in your family help you? Who? How do they help?

 

3.    All families share housework (house chores). Name 2 chores you share with others. Do you do the chores daily, weekly or monthly?

 

4.    What is your favorite house chore? Your least favorite?

 

5.    Sometimes we have a problem in our house or apartment. For example, the internet stops working. Or, the drain in the kitchen sink is plugged. What do you do when the internet stops working in your home?

 

6.    Name an example of a small problem with something in your home. What was it? What did you do?

 

7.    Let’s look at pictures of small problems in the house. Tell us what you see. What is the problem? Has this happened in your house? What did you do?

 

8.    Today, we talked about small problems in the house. Next week, we will talk about a big problem – fire hazards in the home.

 

Our topic is Fire Safety in the Home. We will have a guest speaker from the Seattle Fire Department. We will learn how to make our houses safe from fire.
