Does he have good manners?






Today’s Words


BEHAVIOR

Meaning: Behavior is the way a person conducts themself; or, the way a person acts around other people and animals.

EXAMPLE: An example of a good behavior is to respect other people. An example of a bad behavior is to play loud music on the bus.


RULE / RULES

Meaning: A rule is a guide for behavior. Some rules are enforced by law.

EXAMPLE: Our English class has rules. One example of a rule is to come to class on time.


MANNER / MANNERS

Meaning: Manners are rules of personal behavior. There are good manners and bad manners.

EXAMPLE: An example of a good manner is when a person holds a door open for someone.

EXAMPLE: An example of a bad manner is when a person talks loudly on the phone in a restaurant. 

GOOD MANNERS / BAD MANNERS

POLITE

Meaning: Polite is to show respect to a person through your behavior; good manners.

EXAMPLE: It is polite for the boy to hold the door for his mother.


IMPOLITE

Meaning: Impolite is not polite. It is the opposite of polite, , or to have bad behavior or manners.

EXAMPLE: It is impolite to interrupt someone when they are speaking.


“MIND YOUR MANNERS”

Meaning: To act with good behavior; to behave well.

EXAMPLE: The father said to his son, “Mind your manners when you visit your Aunt Linda. I don’t want to hear that you had bad manners in her home.”

1.     Our English class has rules for students and teachers. Can you name one of the class rules?

2.    Families have rules for behaviors at home. For example, a rule about sharing housework (chores). Tell us a family rule in your home.

3.    Do you have a family rule about:

a.    wearing street shoes inside the house

b.    eating all the food on your plate

c.    time watching YouTube

d.    finishing school homework

e.    sharing household chores

f.    talking on a cell phone at the dinner table

g.    going to church or mosque together

h.    time for daily exercise

i.      smoking a cigarette in the house

j.     taking care of a pet

6.    Let’s talk about manners. Manners are rules of personal behavior. For example, how a person behaves toward other people. There are good and bad manners. Give an example of a good manner.

8.     Have you heard the phrase “mind your manners”? What does it mean?
