An insect is a small animal with many legs.

A bug is an insect. A bug and an insect are the same.

A pest is an animal that makes trouble (a problem) for people.

EXAMPLES: bird, rat, raccoon, mosquito, housefly, ant

 

leash / dog leash /dog leash law

A leash is a strap or cord for walking with a dog.

The City of Seattle has a dog leash law. The law requires a person to walk outdoors with a leash on their dog.

 

Idiom: “it bugs me”

To bug someone is to annoy or irritate them.

EXAMPLE: The kids are playing loud music. It really bugs me because I can’t sleep.

1.     What is your favorite animal? What do you like about it?

2.    What does your favorite animal look like? For example, what color is it? What size is it? Does it walk, run or fly?

3.    Describe its personality. For example, is it friendly or scary? What does it like to eat?

4.    Some animals are pets. Pets live with people. For example, a dog, a cat, or a goldfish. Do you have a pet? Describe it. Do you know someone who has a pet?


5.    Do you see people walking with a dog in your neighborhood? Is the dog on a leash? What is better – a dog on a leash or a dog off-leash?

6.    Do you know about the dog leash law (rule) in Seattle? What does the law say?

7.    Some animals are pests. A pest is an animal that makes trouble (a problem) for people. For example, a mosquito is an insect pest that bites people. Has a mosquito bitten you? What did you do?

8.    Look at the picture of the cockroaches. Cockroaches are pests. Have you had this problem in your house? What can you do?

9.    Look at the animal pictures. Is it a pet or a pest? Or both?
