Crime Prevention Questions and Answers

Last week, we learned about crime prevention. Our guest speaker was Sarah Lawson, Seattle Police Department. Thank you for asking Ms. Lawson many interesting questions. Here are answers she gave us:

1.     How old do you have to be to work for the Seattle Police Department? 

Answer: 20.5 years old at the time of taking the written exam.  This requirement is necessary to ensure all police officers will be able to legally enter all premises that SPD responds to.

2.    Where can I find statistics about crimes in Seattle?

3.    What do I do if my purse and phone are stolen on the bus?

Answer: Call 911 immediately. Tell the bus driver what happened. Ask him or her to call 911 for you. Or, ask a passenger to call 911 for you.

4.    Is 911 free? Will I get a bill if I call?

ANSWER: 911 is free. The government pays for the service.

Today’s Words

HEALTH

Meaning: The condition of your body.

EXAMPLES: His health is good. He is in good health. He is in bad health.

 

HEALTHY / UNHEALTHY

Meaning: Healthy is when your body works well. Unhealthy is not healthy. Unhealthy is when your body doesn’t work well.

EXAMPLE: They walk 5 miles a day and are very healthy.

 

HEALTHY FOOD / UNHEALTHY FOOD

Meaning: Healthy food is good for your body. Unhealthy food is bad for your body.

EXAMPLE: My son eats junk food. Junk food is unhealthy.


SICK / ILL

Meaning: Not feeling well.

EXAMPLE: Sara is sick (ill) today. She has a fever and a headache.


SYMPTOM

Meaning: Something you feel when you are sick. For example, a cough is a symptom of COVID. A headache is a symptom of the flu.

EXAMPLE: The girl is sick with COVID-19. Her symptoms are a fever and a cough.

 

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Meaning: The condition of your body.

EXAMPLE: Her doctor says her physical health is good.

 

MENTAL HEALTH

Meaning: The condition of your mind.

EXAMPLE: Stress isn't good for mental health.

 

FLU / FLU SHOT

Meaning: A flu shot is a vaccine that helps you not get the flu.

EXAMPLE: Maria got a flu shot in October. It will help her stay healthy.

 

Idiom: “LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE.”

Meaning: A person feels better when the have fun with their family and friends.

EXAMPLE: When the man was sad, he would visit his grandchildren and play games. It made him feel happy because laughter is the best medicine.

 


Small Group Questions


1.     What do you do to be healthy?

2.    Physical health and mental health are different. How are they different?

3.    Physical health is about the parts of the body. Name two body parts.

4.    We will look at a picture of the body. Can you name the parts?

 









































 

5.    Body parts can ache. For example, a headache is a common ache. Have you had an ache or pain? Where was it? What did you do?

6.    Flu season is the time of year when the flu virus in active. What months are flu season? What do you do to be healthy during flu season?

7.    Did you ever have the flu? What were your symptoms? What did you do?

8.    Do you have a doctor in Seattle? How did you find your doctor?

9.    Visiting a doctor in the U.S. is not free. How do you pay for your doctor visit? For example, health insurance? Go to a free clinic?

10. Have you heard the phrase “Laughter is the best medicine”? What does it mean? Do you agree?
