SKILL
Meaning: A skill is something a person
learns to do and can do well.
EXAMPLES:
1. Reading
and writing English is a skill.
2. Driving
a car is a skill.
3. Cooking
a meal for your family is a skill.
4. There
are 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
GOAL
Meaning: A goal is something a person
plans to do in the future. It is something to work for.
A personal goal is a goal you have for
yourself or others.
EXAMPLES:
1. My
goal is to read, write and speak English.
2. My
goal is to get a job.
HOLIDAY
Meaning: A holiday celebrates a person
or thing. A day when people do not go to work or school. A day when many businesses
close.

1. September
5 was the Labor Day holiday in America. (Labor means work.)
2. Thanksgiving
is an American holiday in November.
Small
Group Questions
1. What did you do during the
break?
2. What classes are you taking in Fall quarter?
For example, ESOL 2/3 or Ready to Work. When do your classes meet?
3. We practice 2 skills in
conversation class – listening and speaking. Which one is easy? Which is hard?

have for Conversation Class. For example, I want to learn new words.

Many people like to have a picnic or a cookout on the holiday. What is a
cookout? What are popular cookout foods? Do you like to have a cookout?

there a Labor Day holiday in your home country? What is the date? How do people
celebrate it?

On Thursday, we will get to know our classmates and teachers. Name two
things you would like to know about your classmates and teacher.
